Eat Local! Fitness Tip Nutrition Tip

Eat Local – Better for the Environment, Better for You

The next time you’re at the grocery store, take a look at the stickers on your fruits and vegetables. They tell you where in the world your produce comes from. Chances are if it’s not from Canada, it was picked long before it was ripe and mass transported thousands of miles to get to your grocery store. During the long journey, the fruits/veggies were most likely exposed to damage from handling and heat and gassed to induce artificial ripening.

By now most of us have learned that choosing local produce diminishes our impact on the environment. But did you know that buying local can also be beneficial to your health? As even well stored fruits and vegetables lose much of their nutrient value within a few days of picking, you can guess that the well-travelled versions do not provide as much nutrition as their local counterparts. In fact, produce that is frozen quickly after picking often retains more of its super nutritional value than that which is imported and sold as “fresh”.

Unfortunately, our climate doesn’t provide us with fresh blueberries all year round – it can be a challenge to eat local! You can stick to what is seasonally available – at this time of year hearty foods like artichokes, brussels sprouts, garlic, squash, potatoes, kale, cranberries, apples, and many other delightful foods grow naturally in BC and are available at the winter farmers market at Nat Bailey stadium (visit every Saturday from 10am to 2pm). Or, if completely switching your diet to what’s seasonally available isn’t an option, consider preservation methods like freezing, drying and canning to make your favourite seasonal foods last all year long.

Fitness Tip: Improve Workout Qulity with Mind-Body Exercise

Mind-body exercise involves engaging your mind and keeping it focused while performing physical exercise. Mind-body techniques improve body awareness, increase motivation, and enhance your overall workout and fitness. Try the following mind-body techniques to add quality to your workouts:
Focus on your body – concentrate on each muscular movement and how your body is feeling during the movement. Synchronize movements with breathing patterns. Ensure you are taking full inhalations and exhalations while lifting weights and performing cardio. Pay attention to proper form and alignment, performing each movement with precision and control.

Being mindful of your body while exercising improves whole-body health and body control and instills balance both physically and mentally.

Nutrition Tip: Beath Cold Symptoms with Oil of Oragano

Although it doesn’t taste as good as the oregano used in your pizza sauce, oil of oregano can be a powerful tool in helping ward off colds. This natural herb extract works like a powerful antibiotic, has antifungal and antiviral properties, and is packed with immune-boosting active ingredients like carvacrol (a powerful antimicrobial agent). It is relatively inexpensive and good quality brands can be found at natural health pharmacies and health food stores.

It’s no secret that some form of exercise is necessary for a happy, healthy body. Exercise, combined with sensible eating and drinking habits, can help prolong your life and just make you feel better. Maintaining your ideal weight is much easier as well.

However, if you are like many people, exercise is not the most exciting way to spend your time. Slaving at the gym to get that heart pumping and work up a good sweat is not high on a lot of folks’ list of enjoyable pastimes. Besides, it costs money and takes time to go there, workout, and get back home.

May I present an alternative – walking. Walking is a great way to get some needed exercise in without sweating all over and waiting in line for the next weight machine. It is low impact and low cost – actually it’s free!

Walking can be done just about anywhere. It’s hard to beat a nice walk around the lake or a hike through the forest trails on a beautiful day. Even a few times around the block is beneficial to your health and can be done with minimal fuss and trouble.

According to recent studies, walking is just as helpful as running and jogging for your heart and circulatory system. As a matter of fact, it may be better for many folks as it causes much less stress on the body than the constant pounding of jogging. You hear of shin splints, joint pain, and other injuries from running, but you rarely hear of someone getting hurt from walking too much.

Walking is just so easy too. There’s no need to change into special clothing, and no need to change back again after from becoming soaked with sweat. It’s really not necessary to work that hard while taking a leisurely hike or stroll around the block. 30 minutes walks several times a week can really make a difference in your overall health and well-being.

Strenuous exercise like jogging and aerobics can really get the heart racing and the blood pumping, which is beneficial to a point. However when the muscles work this hard they require lots of oxygen to keep going. A side effect of this type of workout is the production of lactic acid in your muscles. This acid is what causes your muscles to feel stiff and painful after a tough workout.

Walking, on the other hand, is an anaerobic exercise. It causes the heart to pump harder and causes more blood to flow, but it does not work the muscles as hard, so it doesn’t cause the body to produce as much lactic acid. You get the benefit of a boost to the circulatory system with a much less stressful effect on the body. Anaerobic exercise also helps to release stored body fat and send it on its way out of your body.

Because it is low stress on the body, anyone can enjoy the benefits of walking several times a week. People with many other ailments can still take up walking as an easy-on-the-body program of exercise. Walking with friends on a regular basis can be an enjoyable and fun way to stay in touch and keep up with the latest news and info.

An ideal way to approach a walking program is to treat it like any type of exercise. Start out slowly and let the body warm up for 10 or 15 minutes. Then pick up the pace and walk faster to get the heart pumping and the blood flow increasing for 20 to 30 minutes. A cool down period of slower walking for 5 or 10 minutes will round out the program.

Walking can be a very agreeable alternative to the crowded, expensive gym. We all need some exercise to be at our best health. Why not head outside for some fresh air and a nice stroll around the neighborhood? The price is right and the health benefits can be great.

See you on the trails!

Mind-body exercise is a form of movement that increases fitness in some way-muscular strength, aerobic levels, flexibility, balance-but also enables you to engage your mind in a non-judgmental way and with an inward-directed focus that may become contemplative.

What does that mean? In short, that means you ask your mind and your muscles to be present and accounted for and to stay intentionally connected to each other. Inward focus means you pay attention to what you are feeling in your muscles as well as your breathing. Through the focus comes the contemplative state attributed to mind-body practices. In addition, mind-body fitness is an outcome, while mind-body exercise is the process. Mind-body movement focuses on the present, not the future. There is no goal, just a continuing practice, which in most cases leads to overall wellness.

So, compared to traditional Western fitness routines where your goal may be to lose 10 pounds or drop three minutes from a 5-kilometer running time, mind-body fitness routines are about just being there and doing them. Build it and they will come. Do it and fitness will happen. This synergistic approach in health and exercise appeals to diverse people with different fitness levels and is appropriate in various life situations. The main aim is often to promote stress management and aid in the release of tension and discomfort caused by modern lifestyles.

To achieve the mind-body connection, various traditional as well as innovative new exercise programs have gained in popularity in recent times. Many of these programs are based on both modern fitness methods and traditional disciplines, and draw their inspiration from the following mind-body techniques and methods, scientific approaches and holistic healing therapies:

Tai Chi–This graceful form of exercise looks like karate in slow motion. The gentle choreography rotates the body in 95 percent of the ways it was intended to move. Best balancing exercise known, also lubricates joints so it’s great for seniors. Improves coordination, mental focus and flexibility so it’s great for athletes. Research shows it is also very beneficial for children.

Yoga–A series of physical poses aimed at integrating mind, body and spirit, and achieving a state of enlightenment or oneness with the universe while increasing strength and flexibility.

Pilates–Conditioning method developed by Joseph Pilates. Combines Eastern and Western philosophies of physical and mental development, and aims to promote neuro-muscular harmony while focusing mainly on the core stabilizing muscles in the body.

Other forms of mind/body fitness include Meditation, NIA, Ai Chi (Tai Chi in the water), Feldenkrais Method, Chi Ball, Alexander technique and many others. All of the above listed forms of fitness are believed to balance the mind and body and may focus on the physical, psychological or spiritual, or a combination of all three.

Yes, it’s true. These two standard ab exercises, crunches and situps, can actually be murder on your low back.

Why? Because they involve spinal flexion (rounding your lower back to allow you to bend forward at the waist). But according to research, that’s the exact mechanism that causes a herniated disc in your lower back. After all, most people “throw their back out” bending over to pick something off the ground.

So it makes sense to limit the amount of traditional sit-ups and crunches in your program. Plus, you can’t spot reduce the fat from one area, so you are better off spending that exercise time on a better total body exercise or intervals. If you want to flatten your abs, you need to lose body fat.

So to improve your abs, use the following techniques:

1) Take half the time you were spending on abs, and do intervals with that time instead.

2) Spend the rest of your ab training time doing endurance ab exercises, such as planks, side planks, mountain climbers, and variations of these exercises.

3) Keep your abs braced in all exercises so that you work your abs in every movement that you do.

For advanced bodybuilding, there will come a time that you will need to do traditional crunching motions. But it is best, for results (i.e. growing your abs) to do these with resistance. Cable crunches are good, and you can get results with a relatively small amount of spinal flexion.

But really, when it comes to having great abs, losing body fat is the most important aspect for most people. And if you are a desk jockey, its more important for you to have abdominal endurance than to risk your back with classic ab exercises.
