Riding is a great way to develop strong leg and core muscles without having to do the typical gym routine on a daily basis. Most people do not own a horse of their own, and if they do they may have to drive out to the country to be able to ride it.

This can be difficult, especially since most programs say you should be active for at least an hour every day of the week. Horseback riding is unique in the sense that it combines three target workout sessions; namely cardiovascular, core strength training, and leg strength training.

This fact combined with the sometimes inconvenient nature of the activity, means that people need a way to do it only a few times a week. Many suggest going horseback riding for 30 minutes to an hour, 3 days a week.

This is an adequate amount of time to dedicate to strengthening muscles and spending time with your steed without being an inconvenience on your day-to-day activities. Since you will be taking off four days of the week, you should supplement with other forms of fitness.

Making sure that you stay in shape and get in exercise when you are not on your horse will make riding a more enjoyable and beneficial experience for both you and the animal you are riding. The better you are able to hold yourself up on the steed because of strong leg and core muscles, the easier it will be for the steed to keep going.

In addition, the more you use your own muscles to hold yourself up, the more calories you will burn and the stronger you will get. Weak riders are sloppy on the saddle making it difficult and painful for both themselves and the steed.

Poor posture, muscle imbalances, and general lack of fitness can make riding less enjoyable, and may lead to less time in the saddle. Not being able to use certain muscles properly will also make cuing and controlling your horse more difficult.

You can also affect your steed’s way of going and the soundness of his back by being unfit and unbalanced. If you only get out to ride occasionally or do major barn cleaning on weekends, staying fit can help you avoid the weekend warrior syndrome-aches and pains from using muscles not accustomed to the job you suddenly ask them to do.

Remember to start slow when beginning any exercise, including riding. If you have any health concerns or injuries in the past, you should consult your doctor before starting any type of new physical activity.

When you are not on your horse, you can get in a good cardio vascular routine on the trail, treadmill, or the streets. You just need to be doing activities that increase your pulse and strengthen your heart muscle.

Jumping rope is another great way to get a cardio workout even if you cannot get to the gym. The constant jumping may also remind you of the bouncing that happens in the saddle.

Stretching is an integral part of physical fitness that should never be skipped. This is a good way to warm up the muscles and prevent any strains or cramping.

For people with lower back pain, or any other type of muscular strain, stretching can help loosen you up and make you more flexible. Lower back pain affects quite a few individuals and a supple back is essential for cuing your horse and staying with the motion.

Exercise balls can also help you develop a stronger sense of balance; which is necessary for horseback riding. These are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at any fitness store or even some physical therapy offices.

Other great activities that you can participate in to help you with strength training, flexibility, and balance include Pilates, yoga, tai chi, and martial arts. Pilates is a great way to stretch out and strengthen your muscles for different movement that you may or may not be familiar with.

Yoga can be as strenuous or gentle as your body will allow it to be. Tai Chi benefits the body in terms of strength, but also trains the mind to focus with moving meditation.

Yes everyone it’s that time of year once again when many will eat as much as they can and then, go into “life reflecting mode” and will make New Year’s resolutions but break them within the first 3 months of the New Year. Guess what the number one New Year’s resolution is? You guessed it, losing weight.

Why do most people fail at weight loss?

So why do so many people fail at fat loss and what can you do to ensure your success for this new year? Well this is what this article is about so keep reading.

1. No silver bullet or magic potions.

The first thing you need to realize is that there is no magic weight loss pill or silver bullet for losing weight and getting in shape. Permanent weight loss requires consistent effort and some dedication. The first thing you need to do is stop looking for a short cuts.

Sure you will find many fad diets around and I guarantee you don’t even go looking they will find you, and you might see some mediocre results with some of these “quick fix” diets out there but none of them are sustainable and they will inevitably come to an end, so once the diet is over, so is the weight loss. Think about it, who can eat one meal a day with only 200 calories forever? That is not even living that’s torcher, and yet many people will fall for these diets with the hope of losing weight.

2. No real commitment or plan.

If you are serious about shedding pounds for good, and you want to increase your chances for success, then you must write down a plan, with your goals and your intended results. Most people start a program with no goals or real plans clearly defined. Write down what you want to accomplish (your overall goal) and break them up into smaller manageable and achievable increments. Write down why you need to lose weight, all your reasons and what your main motivating factor is.

Invest in a good weight loss personal journal, and have it close by so you can review your progress and goals often.

3. Embrace change with a positive attitude!

Make changes to your physical surroundings and I would suggest you start with your kitchen. Get rid of all the junk foods and fattening snacks and replace them with healthy wholesome nutritious foods. What some people fail to realize is that you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight! I am taking about great tasting foods that are just as great tasting and satisfying as the junk food, but with far fewer calories and extra junk. Eat to your heart’s content; you just have to make sure it’s the right kind of foods. Despite what you might have been told, all calories are not created equal, so make right food choices.

Dedicate a place in or around your home where you can do some simple workouts. You have to approach your mission like a business, and that’s because it is serious business! If you are going to go walking then identify a place that is close to home, convenient, and safe.

4. Seek out other like-minded people who will hold you accountable.

You should not try to do this on your own. You know that if left up to you, you might not feel like walking today, so you need others who will help to motivate you, keep you on track and it’s a lot more fun doing it with a partner who also wants the same thing.

5. Get a comprehensive weight loss system

Effective and permanent weight loss all starts with a high quality program. Whenever you are looking at a program make sure it incorporates the most important fat loss elements such as a proper nutritious diet with a sound, fulfilling dietary meal plans for your entire day with an extensive variety of recipes, a good workout plan that will boost your metabolism so you can supercharge your results, one that will support you along the way and includes great strategies and proven techniques for permanent losing the weight. You need a plan that will track your progress and evaluating your results as you move toward the body you have always wanted.

The weight loss industry is gaining so much because more and more people are into losing weight. The companies who belong to this industry sell copies of books that claim to contain the secrets of weight loss. They also sell videos on how to prepare foods that will help you lose weight and videos that teach you how to do exercises for a flatter tummy.

The truth is, you do not have to pay at all when you want to be on a diet. Losing weight means that you have to burn more calories than what you consume. This principle is simple; you just have to control the foods that you eat. When on a weight diet, you should keep track of all the things that you eat. The unhealthy foods should be removed from your diet because they do not contribute any nutrients to the body, you are just actually wasting money on these foods. Weight loss also involves seeking better alternatives to the foods that you usually take in like soda and meat. You can replace the former with fruit juices or tea which are way healthier. You can also eat lean meat instead of meat with fats. You can opt for popcorn instead of potato chips when watching a movie. Potato chips have high levels of salt and unhealthy fat. You can record the foods that you are eating by writing a weight journal. This will help you keep track of your loss progress and keep you motivated.

It’s time for the yearly battle of the bulge that is the holidays. It’s a war out there and the battlefield is lined with fried turkeys, pies, cakes, cookies, and anything else your heart desires. It’s you against the calories. How are you going to come out on the other side unscathed?

That’s definitely easier said than done. A big part of meeting your weight loss goals during the holidays has to do with simply deciding in your mind (and your tummy!) that you will not succumb to those holiday calories. Keep your body active and keep choosing activities that force you and the family off the couch and into the world!

As a long-time personal trainer in Cambridge, MA, I’ve got some great ideas on how to keep your blood pumping and your hunger levels low during this holiday season.

Take a group fitness class – Fighting the urge to stay on the couch and veg? Hit your gym and take in a group fitness class. This can be anything from zumba to yoga to spinning and anything in between – anything that gets you up and moving! Lots of gyms have holiday deals and sales. Check them out and see if you can find a cost-effective way of keeping the pounds off. Also look into taking a group personal training class with friends.

Dress up a little – The weather outside is frightful, but you don’t have to look it! Studies show that the better you feel about yourself, the less harm you will do to your body. So if you’re attending a fancy party, dress for success and chat it up with a handsome stranger. Maybe that person will keep you so busy you won’t even notice you never made it to the refreshment table.

Cook yourself some low-fat options – Going to the family home for that big holiday day? Used to getting home cooking from Mom? This year, try something a little different. Bring your own dish potluck style. You should try to control as many variables as possible in your diet and exercise journey. If you bring your own dish (of course, which you cooked in a healthy way!) you know exactly what’s in it and the portion size that you can have. This is not to say you should only eat this one thing – but at least you have a basis to start from where you can be comfortable.

Get the family involved – Instead of vegging out on the couch post-dinner, get the family up and out. Instead of going to the movies as usual, what about going bowling? Engaging Dad and Grandpa in some games on the Wii Fit? Even having a contest of who can lift the most or having a talent show will use up some of those extra calories you’ve taken in. You never know – you could be starting a new and original family tradition! Help your family meet their weight loss goals in addition to your own, and start the new year bonded and stronger than ever!
