The Contrave weight loss Drug Reviewed by the FDA panel has recently been given support, and now is waiting to receive full approval which is said to come sometime in early 2011.

It was developed and marketed by Orexigen Therapeutic Inc., and is supposedly different from most other weight loss products on the market because it aims to create a change in the way your brain thinks vs. working directly on your metabolism levels.

Contrave has been able to see some success, while only reporting mild to moderate side effects. If this drug is approved and is seen to find continued success, it may change the way we look at weight loss drugs and how they are developed.

What’s Contrave made of?

Contrave is made of a combination of the anti-depressant, Wellbutrin and the addiction drug Naltrexone. These 2 drugs work together to stimulate your brain to help you reduce your food intake and stimulate how your body burns energy. By reducing your food intake and burning more fat, your body will naturally cause weight loss.

Attn! However don’t be too fooled, a complete diet is a MUST in order to give you the needed nutrients and minerals to keep your body healthy and of course regular exercise will work to tone your body.

Does it Really Work?

4 test studies, performed by Orexigen Therapeutic, Inc., showed that more than one half of the people taking Contrave were able to see a success rate of weight loss equal to at least 5% of their total body weight.

What are the Negatives?

The Contrave Weight Loss Drug reviewed recently suggested a negative down side – that it is a “chronic drug” – meaning that you will only be able to see success as long as you are taking the drug. At least at this point, patients who go off the medicine are backsliding and gaining back at least some of their lost weight.

So does Contrave really Work?

Good question. This drug is designed to help all of those who are serious about losing weight. A complete nutrition plan along with a regular exercise plan are both an equally important part of this plan. So only people willing to combine all 3 parts of the plan, will see weight loss success. Contrave will only be available by prescription, so it will require your doctor’s approval before you can take this drug. It will also require check-ups with your doctor in order to evaluate you on a semi-regular basis.

In all reality, losing weight needs to be thought of as a lifestyle change. A weight loss diary is a book or log that you keep to help track and monitor progress of your exercise and weight loss program. They can be as simple as how much exercise you do a day, or your weight once a week, or as detailed as noting every meal you consume during the day including how many calories each meal consists of. No matter how simple or detailed your diary is, it will help you significantly when trying to shed the pounds.

Begin by deciding on how detailed your diary will be. This comes down to personal preference, and how much time you have to dedicate to the diary. If you have 15 minutes a day, make it as detailed as possible. If you dedicate 15 minutes a week, you will make it simple. You don’t need a dairy as such to take notes in; even a simple exercise book will work just fine.

The next step is to decide what you will monitor. As a bare minimum, you must monitor your weight progress, that’s the whole point of the diary! The next thing I would recommend monitoring is how much exercise you do each day. Not just walking all day at work, but extra exercise you do that you have started as part of your weight loss regimen. Then finally note your food intake. This can also be simple or detailed. You may wish to write down how often you ate a snack between meals and what that was, how often you had take-away during the week etc. Ideally you would want to write down a rough estimate of how many calories each meal consists of and totals for each day.

Once you have begun using the diary, we can look back and start to analyze the results. This is a great way to visually see that when you eat certain foods, and exercise a certain amount, you lose X amount of weight. There is no better motivational tool than keeping a weight loss diary. You may have been extra careful one week with eating, exercised 2 or 3 more days than normal, and when you see you have lost an extra 5 pounds this week, you will be motivated to do it all again next week.

Well it is that time of year again where Americans make their New Year’s resolutions to improve themselves. Needless to say, the most popular resolution made every year is to lose weight. Year after year millions of people make this their goal for the upcoming year and start their exercise programs. Unfortunately though, year after year most of the resolutions fail, only to be made again and again every year after that. Sure most people start out with a bang for the first couple of months and do well, but in the end do not finish what they start.

The major flaw that most people have in their resolution to lose that weight is that they do not have a good plan in place for success. As important as exercise is, it is only part of the battle to lose weight. If one only commits to this single part they will almost surely fail to meet their goal. The reason for this is that you are consuming the same amount of calories but need to burn them off via the exercise. Most people commit at first to exercise three times a week, but often find that their body’s cannot handle the stress and impact that this causes. In a response they will cut the workouts back to two or one time a week. Needless to say, they eventually just stop going as life gets in the way or they sustain an injury. The final result is that they are still consuming the same calories, the exercise has stopped, and the fat remains.

For your resolution to stick and actually work, one must not only commit to and exercise program, but also make life style changes. You must change the inside you before you can really change the outside you. To boil it down for all, you must start to understand your own body and how it works, lives and operates. Some individuals will have you go on radical diets and cut out certain foods completely. Much like the above, this will not work either as we are all human.
