We unfortunately live at a time where arguably the most important nutrient for a child’s health — omega 3 fats — is the one they are most deficient in.
This is because of the modern, processed diet. Even if you are a conscientious parent and try to feed your kids the right way, there’s a large chance you still aren’t giving them the omega 3′s they need.
Fish oil for kids, in my view, isn’t something that should be considered optional. They are absolutely imperative for developing children, particularly for their brain’s health.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the rampant cases of children having ADD and ADHD nowadays. A lot of natural health experts believe this link is due to a deficiency in omega 3 fatty acids in the modern diet.
So what do we do as a society? Instead of attempting to correct these nutritional deficiencies first and foremost, we have doctors prescribing medications like Ritalin(TM) instead!
This is not to say legitimate cases of ADD and ADHD in children don’t exist, but why the explosion over the last several decades?
In any event, fish oil for kids is something every responsible parent should consider adding to their child’s dietary regimen on a daily basis. Depending on your kid’s age, the difficulty may be in swallowing the soft gels.
If your children are in their early teens, then it’s no problem. But if they are say, between 3 and 10 years old, then they may not be experienced with swallowing capsules yet, and you may worry about them choking.
The best thing to do to rectify this problem is also the simplest: cut gently into the soft gel and squeeze the fish oil directly on something, like yogurt, that your child can feed to him or herself.
If you think the oil will ruin the taste of whatever it is they are eating and they won’t eat it, you might be surprised. I’ve tried this personally and it works great. If you squeeze it on yogurt, they will barely even taste the fishy-ness at all!
Look, omega 3 fatty acids are so important that in recent years, even infant formulas have become fortified with DHA and EPA (the two most important types of omega 3).
The need for this nutrient doesn’t end in infancy, however. It’s one nutrient we need as we grow up, and well into our middle-aged and senior years.
