A parent wants the best for their children and selecting kids’ dentists may be a smart option. Good oral health should begin in babyhood in order to instill lifelong habits and longevity of the teeth. With proper attention, each tooth that erupts in an infant’s mouth can be stronger and less susceptible to decay. Here are some things parents should consider:

- Even before the choppers begin to emerge, an infant should have his or her gums cleaned after feedings. Cleaning can be done with a damp soft washrag.

- Babies should not be put to bed with their bottle. Falling asleep with sweet liquid dribbling into their mouths is an invitation to tooth decay and a condition called “bottle mouth.”

- Even formula and breast milk contain sugars. Juices and sodas are definite no-no’s in bedtime bottles. Water is the only acceptable fluid for them to sip while falling asleep.

- Pacifiers should never be dipped in sugar or honey to quiet down a fussy child. Anything sweet will transform into bacteria and acidic deposits which will damage the enamel of sprouting teeth.

- Thumb sucking and pacifier dependence should be discontinued by the fourth or fifth birthday. Once permanent choppers begin to arrive, misalignment may occur due to the sucking.

- According to most dentists, children should begin drinking from a sippy cup by their first birthday. After some months of practice with the sippy cup, a regular drinking glass should be introduced.

- Teething timetables vary depending on the individual genetic predisposition. The two central bottom incisors are often the first to arrive, followed by the two central uppers.

- Teaching kids how to brush and floss should begin in early childhood. They may need help from their parents until they are in their elementary school years, however.

- Toothpastes containing fluoride are a good idea in moderation. Adults will need to monitor the amounts initially, as large dollops of the substance can make the youngsters sick. Fluoride can help increase strength of the enamel and cut down on decay.

- Earlier orthodontia: Back some years ago, orthodontists didn’t start their work of straightening till the kids were adolescents. This has changed to early preventative intervention which can eliminate the need for braces or cut the timeframe of straightening down substantially. Even elementary school youngsters should consult an orthodontist if it’s apparent that they will end up with a crooked grin.

- Braces can be cool: So many children end up wearing braces in order to straighten their smiles. The dental industry has taken note of that and beautified the apparatuses. Clear, multicolored or fancily bejeweled – braces have become hip.

- They are what they eat: Not only is a growing human body formed by the nutrients which are ingested, by each tooth is affected as well. The healthier the menu, the healthier the kid. Sugary or starchy items break down into acidic residues which erode the enamel. When sweets are eaten, brushing and flossing should follow as soon as possible.

Your kids’ dentists can keep their mouths healthy. The practitioners can be the beginning of a lifetime regime of strong dental habits.

Drinking Water For Kids

We all know we need water to survive, but try convincing a seven-year-old of that fact. Lots of kids don’t like water and would rather have a sugary juice or soda pop. It’s the duty of the parent to ensure their child is getting enough water in their diet.

Drinking water is a very important key to overall health for kids. Water is an essential nutrient that composes 50 to 60 percent of your total body weight. Water is the key component which transports other nutrients throughout your body to help build and repair cells. Blood needs water to carry oxygen throughout the body, which is why one would die if they were deprived of water for several days.

Although it varies from person to person, it is recommended that kids drink six to eight glasses of pure water per day. Additional amounts should be considered during warm weather and when exercising or just playing in the yard.

While the best source is a glass of pure water, kids can also get water into their bodies though certain foods. Think of all the delicious fruits and vegetables that have large amounts of water: grapes, peaches, oranges, green pepper, tomatoes and celery.

It’s best to get kids in the habit of drinking water early. A child spoiled by flavorful drinks may start to refuse water altogether. Understand the dangers of those alternative drinks. Most soda pop is filled with sugar or the deadly sugar substitute aspartame. Very unhealthy, not to mention most of these drinks have caffeine which is a diuretic and actually takes water out of your body.

One can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 to 55 mg of caffeine and is loaded with preservatives and other artificial food colors and sulphites. Studies have linked soda to osteoporosis, obesity, tooth decay and heart disease.

Even juices are packed with sugar, and many have the same amount of sugar as sodas. It’s recommended to water down juices when given to children: no more than 50% juice and the rest water. Even in those cases, the amount of juice given to a child should be in small quantities.

For a child to drink a proper amount of water, the responsibility begins and ends with the parents. They have a great influence on their child’s drink intake. It’s best to lead by example. If a child sees his parents consistently drinking soda, they will also want soda.

Parents should do their best to provide pure drinking water for their kids and consume water filled fruits and vegetables. This will improve and maintain the health of the family.

Pregnancy Snacks

Scientists agree that it’s better to consume 5 or 6 smaller meals throughout the day while you’re currently pregnant. It is easier for the body to digest, and it has been known to diminish morning sickness and heartburn. It is also a means to consistently supply the body the nutrients, vitamins, amino acid proteins as well as vital minerals that are needed to provide your unborn child what it needs in its developing phase. Eating smaller all through your day will also manage your weight.

You have to understand your body and your baby’s body don’t require that you just eat any food. What your body requires you to eat while you are pregnant is high quality healthy food. It is important to get your thoughts around the idea that everything you eat is either bad or good for your pregnancy. For just the next few months, unless you’re going to breast-feed, it’s time to give up caffeinated sodas and coffee, all low-nutritional/high-caloric foods including candy. One of several things you must give up would have to include lattes and fast foods. It’s time to consider eating healthy for your baby beginning right this moment.

Although it may well appear as if taking all these items off your eating list there is nothing left to consume, there are a few pregnancy snack ideas that could make it on your list of new pregnancy healthy “junk-food”. That may include fruit (such as apples and oranges, pears, grapes, melons, pears and berries), apples with peanut butter, crackers and low-fat cheese, nine-fat or low-fat milk together with graham crackers, pudding, yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese with vegetables or fruit, pregnancy bars, or half a sandwich. When eating these foods, especially fruit, it’s not about “less is better”, it’s about “the better the quality, the more nutritional it is” for you and your baby.

If every time you put something in your mouth you think about what nutritional value, if any at all, you’re getting out of that food, is going directly to your baby who is using it to develop. Your baby can go nowhere else to acquire what it really needs other than through you. So instead of eating a piece of candy, try something new, have a piece of “pregnancy candy” (some dried fruit) instead. When the thought occurs to go out for the french fries during your lunch hour, let your thoughts turn to “pregnancy junk food” (a handful of nuts, some fruit or maybe a nutritional bar). Maintaining a healthy diet of pregnancy snacks will make a significant difference in your health and that of your newborn.

And yes it’s true that a pregnant woman needs at least an additional three hundred calories each day when she is in her second and third trimester. Although that might seem like a tremendous amount of extra food, it is easy to add three hundred calories by eating just one extra thing every day. Carrying a child is not a license to go crazy and began eating everything you see. By making healthy and balanced selections, choosing fresh vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy products, lean proteins, and 100% whole grains you will be on the right path to being a healthier mom with a healthier and stronger newborn.

A Specialized ADHD Nutrition Plan Could Help Patients Focus

Currently one of the most widely accepted theories about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is that it is caused by nutritional problems. This theory really only applies to childhood ADHD and does not even account for all of the childhood ADHD cases, but when some dietary studies were conducted on ADHD nutrition plans for those with the disorder, there were some beneficial results. The whole nutrition and ADHD correlation emerged in nineteen ninety when an English researcher found out that certain artificial food colorings found in some foods could actually deplete the amounts of zinc in an ADHD patient’s body. Later, scientists also found that those children suffering from ADHD also had lower levels of required sulfate molecules throughout the body. Studies which attempt to prove that ADHD and diet are not related at all, citing that only five percent of all ADHD patients have something wrong with their normal dietary intake. Whatever the case, putting your child on an ADHD nutrition plan may be one possible way to help alleviate the hyperactivity associated with such a disorder.

There are several key aspects to an ADHD nutrition plan that any parent should keep in mind. The first and possibly most obvious of any diet is to make sure that your hyperactive child does not receive any sugary sweets or any candy. This should also include sodas and any other products which are high in sugar. By cutting sugars out of the ADHD nutrition plan, your child will not exhibit the hyperactive energy associated with ADHD. Also, make sure your child avoids caffeine, as caffeine has the same stimulating effect on the body as sugar. If you find that neither of these two ADHD nutrition changes affects your child, try taking any and all wheat products out of their diet. Some kids have an undiagnosed wheat allergy which can contribute to hyperactivity. Instead of the wheat products, switch to oats and rye. Finally, and this goes for any child (not just those with ADHD), make sure your child gets plenty of vegetables and fruits in their diet along with fish at least once a week.

An alternative to just cutting out sugars and caffeine from an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder patient’s diet was created by Dr. Benjamin Feingold. Aptly named the Feingold diet, this ADHD nutrition plan focused on the research which linked artificial colors and flavors to the loss of zinc in certain children’s bodies. This diet has been the source of much debate over its effectiveness, but for those looking for a dietary way to combat the problems associated with ADHD, the Feingold diet may be a good method to check out.

The Feingold ADHD nutrition plan is currently a two step program with the first step requiring the elimination of all artificial colors and flavors from the child’s food. The second step of the Feingold program requires that all aspirin containing products and natural salicylate containing foods should also be removed from the child’s diet. While this method of ADHD nutrition may prove to be useful, there are actually certain claims which Feingold makes that are totally incorrect. Most importantly, certain nutritional experts have shown that in the Feingold diet cookbook many of the recommended foods are actually high in salicylates; a chemical which Feingold says can cause your child to be hyperactive.
