If you are looking to lose weight and become healthier in 2011, throw away any notions of starting any kind of crash diets. Crash diets rarely last 2 weeks if you’re lucky and often times you will gain the weight back and more. Crash diets set you up for failure, even before you begin.

So what is the answer if you are looking to lose weight and become healthier in 2011…

In 2 words… Lifestyle Change

Your lifestyle changes must be reasonable or you will not be able to stick to it for long. By implementing a few subtle changes to your eating and exercise habits, you may help yourself lose weight and become healthier in 2011. Sometimes, the littlest things can make the biggest difference.

Examine your diet patterns closely and see if there are some bad lifestyle patterns that you can start to break immediately. For example, do you find certain times of day when you crave something sweet? Or do you find certain times when you really want something, but know deep down that you should not indulge in? Think about what you can reasonably and easily give up and replace it with something that is healthier, that will make you feel better and look better. It really is that simple, but we all make it harder than it really needs to be. That is why we need a lifestyle change and not another crash or fad diet.

Here are some habits that you might consider changing in order to lose weight and become healthier in 2011. Look for bad habits, wipe them out and instill good habits instead of the old. Make these permanent changes and ask yourself, “Can I maintain this change for the rest of my life?” But, remember these changes are to insure that you lose weight and that you live a healthy lifestyle and you will feel better mentally, physically and biologically. Who wouldn’t want that for themselves?

Fast Food – Avoid like the plague. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein… you get the idea.

Drinks – When you’re thirsty, drink water. But, if you are like me, sometimes I need something with a little more taste. In this case you can choose drinks that don’t have any calories (tea, or diet soft drinks). Avoid alcohol and soda that contains useless calories.

Snacks – Do you have a certain time of day that you just HAVE to have a snack? Stock your kitchen with low calorie snacks. Throw away ALL high carbohydrate and sugary snacks.

Dinner Time – Cook only what you will eat and avoid leftovers. You do not want to have extra food sitting in front of you at the table or you are liable to pick even when you are full. Most importantly, you certainly want to avoid the late night, left over, munchies (use to be one of my favorites!).

Exercise – Exercise must be incorporated into your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car further away than usual, go for a walk, walk the dog, anything. Just start to get exercise and start to build on that. You will be amazed at how much better you feel just doing that. Carefully examine your routine and plan on doing something that you don’t mind doing. If you enjoy it, you are that much more likely to continue doing it and you will reap the rewards.

It is true that a low carb diet can be a healthy way to lose weight, but only if it also includes high fiber as part of the diet plan. Having a lot of fiber in your diet is good, just as having fewer carbs in your diet is better for you, but when you combine the two, you end up with a diet that will not only work, but be a lot healthier for you.

Sure, certain types of carbs are bad for you, but it is important to remember that your body needs some carbs in order to function properly. A diet that eliminates all carbs isn’t a healthy diet at all, because carbohydrates are how you get your energy. So what you need is a diet that is low in carbs, and includes the types of carbs that are good for you.

Because carbs provide the energy that your body needs, if you attempt to totally eliminate all carbs from your diet, you will begin to feel tired all the time, and like you simply don’t have any ambition at all. What you need to do is to eat the right carbs, such as whole grain breads, but even these types of carbs will have to be kept at a minimum if you want to lose weight. Carbs, especially those that are very high in sugar or starch will lead to weight gain, as they are stored as fat. Also, a diet that is high in carbs can eventually lead to illnesses, such as diabetes or heart disease.

While you reduce your carb intake, you will also want to increase the amount of high fiber foods you have in your diet. Some examples of fiber-rich foods include, oatmeal, vegetables and some fruits. When you eat the right fiber rich foods you will have an easier time obtaining your weight loss goals because these foods can help you feel full for a longer period of time, which means that you will actually eat less. In addition to this, fiber also helps your body get rid of toxins and waste, which helps you lose weight, and to become healthier.

If you truly want a healthy way to lose weight you should consider the high fiber, low carb diet. This might be your best option for losing weight, and keeping it off for the long term.
